Colorful Accents: Break the Monotony

If you need a splash of color in your decor, you should check out some of the new offerings with fruity names. Gone are the days of orange, purple and green. Now we have Pumpkin, Eggplant, and Avocado. With a twist of Lemon and a dash of Lime, you can really bring your drab interior to life. Don’t fall into the trap of all neutrals or all pastels. If you have mostly neutral furniture, sprinkle it with bright accents of Spice and Blueberry. Better yet, choose one showcase item - be it your sofa, chaise lounge, or easy chair - and swap it out for another model in a vivid hue. With proper lighting and accessories, even one brightly colored piece of furniture will set off an entire room.

Even pastel motifs don’t have to stay soft and colorless. Find two pastel colors that go well together, like pale lemon yellow and mint green. Use those for your walls and background colors. Then load up on accent pillows and rugs of the same colors in brighter shades (Sunshine Yellow and Lime Green, for example).

If you have a black and white background, think of the room as your palette. You want to add color in a bold, stylish, interesting way. Bright solids go well with black and white patterns. Animal prints also go well with bright or even fluorescent solids, if you want to make a really bold statement. And don’t forget about textures! No matter how nice your sofa looks, guests won’t want to sit on it for very long if it’s scratching their skin. Go for soft, touchable surfaces like chenille, soft fur, or ultra-suede. If you choose fur, be sure that it’s soft and silky, not shirt and bristly.

Think of bursts of color among drabs as a pleasant visual surprise for your guests and yourself.
