Did you know that there are plenty of ways to make a small space just as lovely and comfortable as a larger space? All you have to do is pay attention to certain details when remodeling, and soon your quaint, cozy room will suit any purpose you need it to.
First, double up on storage space. Find pieces of furniture with hidden drawers and compartments, low tables with pull-out sides and table tops that can be flipped up to reveal storage space for books, magazines and games. Armoires and closet doors can be fitted with hanging storage units that disappear from view when you close the door. There are even flat plastic boxes made specifically to store items beneath couches and beds. They are very convenient, and can be quickly stowed away when guests are coming.
Also look for furniture that can serve more than one function, such as stools that can double as end tables, coffee tables that can double for bookcases, and seating that can be folded out to double as bedding. If you have pets or children, or just have a lot of traffic through the small room, look for commercial grade furniture. It’s extra tough. Also try to get stain and water resistant materials, and choose colors and patterns that don’t show dirt.
Finally, always look for furniture that can be folded up or stacked, to maximize floor space when you’re not entertaining guests. Nesting tables are a wonderful option, as are folding and stacking chairs. Dining tables can be expanded with removable leaves for large dinners, then retracted to their original size.
The key to decorating a small space – and any space, really – is to find your inspiration and go for it. Take a great idea you find in a book or magazine, and alter it to suit your needs. You’ll be amazed at how great a small space can look.
