Ok, I’ll admit it. I like crackly things. The sound, the texture, everything. If it crackles, I like it. I love Rice Krispies because they crackle. I love certain cat toys that you can squeeze in your hand to produce a crinkly, crackly sound. And I was even a big fan of that spray paint that dries into a crackled texture. Well, at least until everyone and their aunt started using it on everything from coffee tables to wooden planters. That eroded the charm, for me.
The Jolly Jubilee chair from Ineke Hans has a crackly motif. Not the crackle-paint I once found endearing, but a design made of grey leaves that would, if they were real and three dimensional, probably crackle. I like them because they’re a pretty shade of drab, and the way they are outlined sort of makes them look like spider webs. Very artistic, whimsical without looking silly, and probably really good as modern bistro furniture.
But apparently the chair was a decorative designer gift to furniture manufacturer Arco. Says Hans, “When it´s your birthday as a child in Holland, your chair is always decorated. Then it really feels like a party. For Arco´s 100th birthday I have therefore designed a special gift: a decorated chair.”
Bonluxat describes the Jolly Jubilee as simple in form, and decorated with a leaf motif applied using a milling machine. I don’t know what that means, but it sounds like serious business. The chair is made from colored, lacquered MDF.
I like it. The leafy pattern keeps it from looking entirely like something Wednesday Adams might be sent to for a time-out, and the color and blocky form work well together. Ineke Hans can decorate my birthday chair anytime!
