Modern Seating for Your Business: Peter Opsvik’s “Gravity Balans” Chair

I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing when I can’t look at a piece of furniture without laughing a little. Now, I’m not really laughing at the furniture. I’m more laughing in its general direction. I know that I don’t have what it takes to design a chair, so I give due respect to anyone who can come up with an idea and turn it into something people can sit on. No, it’s not the chair itself that’s funny; it’s the mental image I get when I imagine myself trying to get into this one, as it’s posed:

Meet the Gravity Balans – two things you’ll need to keep from doing yourself an injury. Hopefully the chair is flexible enough to bend into some semblance of normalcy once it has an occupant. I don’t actually see any photographs of people sitting in it, so I have no photographic proof to back up this theory. Unfortunately, it looks very springy, and would probably be the kind of seat in which I couldn’t keep myself from bouncing up and down, eventually launching myself out of the seat and into a wall. (Not that that’s ever happened to me.) Couldn’t you just imagine this chair being used for juice bar furniture? After drinkers had their shot of vitamins and minerals, they’d shoot up out of this thing like a rocket.

With its interesting modern lines, the Gravity Balans would make attractive outdoor bar furniture. It would also go well in an indoor modern setting, especially one with slightly padded walls and plenty of cushions about. And with its imaginative design, it would definitely be one of the more interesting bistro chairs in the UK. (Just be sure to have patrons sign a waiver before they hop in.)
